Unbreakable

Unbreakable

The master behind The Sixth Sense delivers his equally stunning follow up. Bruce Willis, once again, stars in an M. Night Shyamalan dark and twisting tale.
David Dunn (Bruce Willis: The Whole Nine Yards, The Sixth Sense, The Siege) mysteriously survives a massive train wreck that proves lethal to every other passenger. Not only does he live, but he walks out of the hospital, unhurt. His wife (Robin Wright: Message in a Bottle, Hurlyburly, Forrest Gump) and son (Spencer Treat Clark: Gladiator, Double Jeopardy, Arlington Road) are shocked, but even this second chance may not save his marriage. As if not enough, Elijah Price (Samuel L. Jackson: Shaft, Rules of Engagement, Deep Blue Sea) contacts Dunn and they form a very strange relationship. Dunn survived this miraculous event, and Elijah wants to know how and why; for, Elijah has brittle-bone disease.

WARNING: Do not allow anyone to tell you any more than this about this film. If you have seen The Sixth Sense, you know that M. Night Shyamalan (The Sixth Sense, Wide Awake, Praying with Anger) is very fond of twists and devilish little secrets that are better left untold.

Unbreakable may just be the best film that has hit the screen this year. Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson are brilliant together. They work off each other like very few pairs in Hollywood. Willis gives us a strong, deep and thoughtful character, which contrasts very nicely with Jackson’s frail, bitter, and angry persona.

The overall tone of this film is dark. Not gritty dark like Seven, but dark like…well, The Sixth Sense. There are glimmers of happiness, but the world Shyamalan has painted for us promises very little hope. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not a doom and gloom film, it’s just a bit of a pessimistic view of our society.

I’m not going to tell you anything else about this gem. Just make sure you go see it. You don’t want to miss out.
